What is Islands in the Net?

Islands in the Net is an open-world exploration game set in a retro-futuristic cyberpunk dystopia. Players assume the roles of characters who are new to Night City, a Mega-city in Northern California. The core gameplay is based around exploration and adventure! There are two “universes” within the game world: Realspace and Cyberspace and both are closely intertwined. Adventurers may frequently want, or need, to jump in between them! A well developed back-story is highly recommended!

None of the content of this game is necessarily original, as it draws heavily from some of my favorite science fiction. It’s more of a kitbash. I wanted to create something new out of a familiar cultural touchstone, and this is the result. I needed a robust and flexible RPG system that could meet the demands of a homebrew game universe. GURPS has proven to be an excellent system for these sorts of games.

I hope you have as much fun playing the game as I have had in creating it!

Getting Started

You will need GURPS Basic Set, GURPS High Tech and GURPS Ultra-Tech, as reference for the core game mechanics. Since this game is largely homemade, I strongly encourage players to read (or at least skim) the World Almanac for information on the setting. For tone and style considerations, please read the The Edge, What is Cyberpunk? and the Lexicon.

Next, you’ll need to create a character. There are ready-made templates available if you need a place to start. As always, please feel free to consult with me directly if you need help creating a character.

Not all technologies listed in GURPS Ultra-Tech exist in this world, nor are they freely available. For a comprehensive reference on what is available, please consult the Catalog for a detailed listing of skills, advantages, disadvantages, perks, traits and equipment available to you.
